Gielty’s Clew Bay, Dooagh, Achill - at St. Brendan’s Nursing Home, Mulranny.

Sadly missed by his devoted wife Sally, daughter Deirdre, sons Alan and Diarmuid, his beloved grandchildren Kevin, Aileen, Muireann, Siofra and Judy, son-in-law John, daughters-in-law Maeve and Catherine, brother Anthony, sisters-in-law Mary and Bridie, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Following Government Guidelines Michael’s funeral will be private for family members only.

Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Pollagh on Saturday at 12 noon followed by burial in Slievemore cemetery.

No flowers please. Donations in lieu if desired to St. Brendan’s Nursing Unit, Mulranny or St. Colman’s Day Care Centre, Keel.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family members. Michael was one of the brightest spots in the summer of 2005 that I spent at the Achill Island Field School. I will always remember the twinkle in his eye when he talked and shared tales of his adventures. He will be sorely missed and future field school attendees will have missed out on meeting a special part of Achill.

Many years ago, during a short visit to Achill, Shiela McHugh introduced me to Michael in The Clew Bay. I owe him and others who were on the shore at Keem 12 May 1951 a huge debt of gratitude when they found my father Hugh Falkus near to death and revived him with Guinness bottles filled with hot seawater. Hugh was filming sharks with his wife, Bill Brendon, Sam Lee and Charles Osborne when the boat capsized. Hugh was the only survivor. it was a privilege to have met Michael and have a first hand account of what happened. My sincere condolences to his wife and family and my thoughts and prayers are with them and for the happy repose of his soul.
