Castlebar councillors have highlighted the need for additional cemetery places at most of the more than twenty cemeteries across the Castlebar Municiplal District at present.
They have urged the local authority, as part of the solution, to look at building a cremation wall in Castlebar .
Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere pointed out that anyone can see from the local death notices, the increasing number of people opting for cremations, and he says it would be appropriate to have a crematorium wall in the county town where relatives and friends could visit, if the deceased does not wish for his / her ashes to be scattered.
David Mellet, Head of the Castlebar Municipal District had previously told councillors that a crematorium wall, as suggested by councillors, could cost an estimated €20,000.
Monies have now been assigned to begin the process, and a suitable location needs to be identified. Cllr Deere is suggesting a section of Castlebar Old Graveyard, that has been cordoned off due to flooding, that may be an ideal location.
He has been speaking to Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley about the need for a crematorium wall in Castlebar…
