Galway Senator Seán Kyne has become the first person from his county to be appointed as Leader of the Seanad.
He has also been announced as Leader of the Fine Gael group in the Upper House, which was decided upon yesterday following advice from Tánaiste Simon Harris.
A native of Moycullen in Connemara, Senator Kyne was elected to the Seanad in 2020, and was re-elected earlier this month.
Among his key areas of focus, the former TD has cited the use and visibility of An Ghaeilge, and the delivery of infrastructure right across Ireland.
Senator Kyne was appointed to the Cultural and Educational Panel in 2020, a role that he continues in today following his re-election.
