The county of Roscommon is in mourning today following the death of long serving councillor Anthony Waldron.
He was found dead at his home in Ballintubber this morning, and it’s understood that he passed away from natural causes.
Mr. Waldron was aged in his 60s, and was re-elected to Roscommon County Council in the Local Elections last June.
He first served as a Fianna Fáil cllr from 2004 to 2009, and returned to politics as an Independent in 2019.
Mr. Waldron was a lifetime community activist, and chairperson of the Suck Valley Way Development Co-Op Ltd – an organisation which promotes and develops tourism and amenities across the wider Suck Valley Region.
As a councillor, he regularly raised local issues on radio, with the most recent of those concerning the spate of burglaries across the county last year, during which he helped to organise a protest rally in Castlerea calling for more Garda resources and to ensure that people feel safe in their own homes.
Mr. Waldron’s funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
