Planning for an extended emergency department at Mayo University Hospital is due to be submitted by September, according to the Hospital Manager, Catherine Donohoe.
Catherine has been speaking to Midwest News this lunchtime, following the visit of the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to the Castlebar hospital on Thursday last, where he held a private meeting with hospital management on the urgent need for an extended Emergency Department to meet the increasing demand and the ongoing serious overcrowding in it.
Prior to the private meeting, speaking to Midwest News the Taoiseach admitted that he is well aware of the serious overcrowding at the hospital’s ED and said that he was keen to talk to management and indicated that construction on the new ED could be underway by next year.
Midwest News editor Teresa O’Malley asked Catherine Donohue if the Taoiseach gave them any concrete indication that the ongoing overcrowding issue at the ED will be addressed anytime soon....
