The impending legal incorporation of St Angela’s College into the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is great for Sligo and its evolution as a university town. That’s the view of Sligo/Leitrim TD Marian Harkin.
The first step in the final part of the legislative process to incorporate St. Angela’s into ATU will be taken tomorrow (Tues) when a motion to do so will be placed before the Dáil.
The Independent deputy says the motion will happen without debate and is expected to be unanimously approved.
The process began on November 2nd last year when a joint application was submitted to the Minister for Further and Higher Education by St. Angela’s College and ATU. Under new legislative provisions a higher education provider and an existing technological university can apply for a ministerial order incorporating the former into the latter.
On February 3rd the Minister notified St. Angela's and ATU of his decision to grant their application, subject to the completion and signing of a legal agreement. He received the signed legal agreement on June 1st.
