
The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is due in Mayo this morning (Thursday) to officially open the new N5 dual carriageway from Turlough to Westport.
The final section of the new road will open to the public this afternoon from 1pm.
This includes a 10 km dual carriageway from Pheasanthill/Derrylea, Castlebar, to Knockranny, Westport and a 2km single carriageway northern bypass of Westport.
All interchanges and roundabouts associated with the new N5 road will also be opened from 1pm.
The 250 million euro investment gives the county its first stretch of dual carriageway.
According to Westport Fine Gael deputy, former Minister, Michael Ring if the funding had not been secured for this major project ahead of the last general election, it would never have been secured under the present coalition government which includes the Greens and Minister Eamon Ryan.
