A Mayo man, in his 40s, has been killed while battling Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, his family confirmed today (Thursday).
Finbar Cafferkey, a native of Achill Island, Co. Mayo, was a military volunteer with previous combat experience in Syria where he assisted Kurdish militia in their battle against ISIS.
He recently travelled to Ukraine to assist local forces there.
Reports of Finbar’s death were confirmed by a family member, at the family home in Cashel, Achill, this afternoon.
It is understood the family may issue a statement on Finbar’s death later.
The community of Achill are said to be numbed and saddened, as news came through of Finbar’s tragic passing over the last 24 hours.
Finbar’s commitment to humanitarian and environmental causes was well known.
