Fine Gael Cllr. Jarlath Munnelly has called on Mayo County Council to retain the existing traffic measures that were implemented in Ballina town on a trial period, to see if this can provide a better solution to the ongoing traffic congestion in the town.
To facilitate the visit of President Biden to Ballina, traffic travelling in both directions was re-introduced along the river Moy at Emmet St, and over the bridges in the town.
The councillor claims that many motorists have remarked that despite the additional traffic in town during the past week, traffic was in fact moving better.
He says that the council implemented changes in traffic in Ballina very quickly, including removing traffic islands and he is now suggesting that the council should trial 2-way traffic in this part of town for another month, see how it goes.
Mayo County Council is planning to conduct a review of traffic in the town, but Cllr Munnelly says that this is an ideal opportunity to make a meaningful change to the traffic quickly.
