A two week farm vehicle inspection campaign will get underway today, with inspectors from the Health and Safety Authority set to focus on the use of tractors and quad bikes.
There were 34 vehicle related deaths on farms over the past five years, according to this morning’s Irish Times, of which 18 involved tractors and four involving quad bikes.
Ten of the farm deaths associated with tractors concerned people over the age of 65.
The quad bike fatalities saw two adults of over 60 years of age and two children lose their lives.
These inspections come as new regulations are set to be installed in November, requiring training and personal protection equipment for people using quad bikes in all workplaces.
