It’s unfair that elected councillors and local communities are left in the dark in relation to the housing of refugees and asylum seekers across the county. That is the strong view of Castlebar based Fine Gael councillor Donna Sheridan.
The councillor, again, called on the Director of Services with Mayo County Council Tom Gilligan to keep elected councillors up to date monthly, on the number of refugees and asylum seekers that are being accommodated in areas all over count y Mayo.
Her request for this information to be included in the Director’s monthly report to councillors, was seconded by Westport based councillor Peter Flynn at this week’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council.
Councillor Sheridan says the lack of consultation with local communities and local councillors when groups of asylum seekers and refugees are to be housed in various communities, is not acceptable, as she says the wrap around services to support such developments are not in place across the county, to date.
Councillor Sheridan has been telling Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley why she has sought more regular updates and information from Mayo County Council on what’s happening and what’s planned.
