A building located in a busy Castlebar business park, is being converted into a new centre for international protection applicants.
The development is taking place at the N5 Business Park in Moneen, Castlebar.
Works are underway on renovating the large derelict building, to facilitate over 50 housing units.
Originally the premises was earmarked as a business centre.
Over 200 people currently residing at the Breaffy Sports Arena in Castlebar will be moved to the location when the works are completed.
The works include the creation of a new pedestrian access to the footpath at Moneen Road, leading to the town centre.
Primbrook Limited is the company behind the development.
Catering and other facilities, when the facility is in operation, will be provided by Breaffy House Resort.
The Breaffy Sports Arena will also be retained as a centre for international protection applicants.
This was confirmed by Tom Gilligan, director of housing services with Mayo County Council, at this week’s monthly meeting of the authority.
Mr Gilligan welcomed the development adding that it is bringing a significant derelict building back into use.
He said Mayo's new residents are making a valuable contribution to the community and many schools and businesses in the locality are benefiting as a result.
He concluded saying that “our duty of care during a time of humanitarian crisis has been very good”.
