
A Sligo councillor has welcomed the abolition of inpatient and day service charges at hospitals, but says more needs to be done to assist patients with a long term illness.
Councillor Marie Casserly says there is a lot of pressure and expense on patients who may had to give up their jobs while receiving treatment.
Previously, any patient without a medical card faced an €80 fee every time they had to stay overnight in a hospital, up to a maximum of €800 a year but that was abolished last week.
The Independent councillor told Midwest Radio's Alannah Nolan that the government now need to consider reducing or scrapping other fees faced by such patients who regularly attend hospitals for treatment....
