Almost a quarter of Garda stations had fewer officers at the start of this year when compared with last year.

While 42 stations have no permanent Garda according to a study by the Irish Independent.

Among the stations in Dublin with fewer staff were Stepaside, Howth, Malaide and Rathmines.

The Bridewell in Cork and Salthill in Galway also had reduced staffing levels.
