Inspections to ensure householders and businesses are dealing with waste disposal in a correct manner will proceed when Covid-19 restrictions allow.

Fianna Fail Councillor Damien Ryan was told in response to a motion he tabled at a meeting of the local authority calling for a zero tolerance policy in relation to dumping and dog fouling, with full enforcement of the local authority's powers.

Mayo County Council has invested in covert CCTV cameras, fixed cameras and also a drone to detect illegal waste activity and identify those involved.

A data protection issue has arisen regard the use of digital technology and legislative change needed to resolve it is currently being drafted by the Oireachtas.

Cllr. Ryan says it is important to up the ante and combat the littering plight across the county.
