The An Post building on Eglington Street in Galway is to be developed as a permanent arts space for Galway city, according to local deputy Catherine Connolly.
The deputy believes the development of this dedicated arts space is the first step in addressing a serious deficit in arts infrastructure in both Galway city and county. The 2019 Arts Council report ‘Review of Arts Centres and Venues’ identified Galway city and county as having a considerably below-average number of arts venues per head of population, compared to other local authorities across the country.
Deputy Connolly has called for the new arts centre to be in public ownership, and available and accessible to all members of the community, and so has requested that the Department provide the full details of the planned development.
