People are being warned of dangerous driving conditions across the region this morning.

A status yellow snow and ice alerts expired in Connacht and 11 other counties at 8 o'clock this morning.

There was snow and sleet in many areas yesterday, but Met Éireann says it's now changing to rain in most parts.

In Mayo, treacherous road conditions have been reported on most routes around Westport, particularly on the N5 Castlebar Rd, the N59 Newport Rd and the N59 Leenane Rd.

Midwest News understands that a number of vehicles, including trucks, bin lorries and cars, left the road between Bellacorrick and Crossmolina.

Mayo County Council has sent crews to treat and clear the road near Bellacorrick.

Gardaí are advising motorists to avoid the Mulranny to Ballycroy road if possible.

There is heavy snowfall on the route and it is currently impassable.

Snow has also been reported on all other routes around the county.

In Galway heavy snowfall has been reported on the N59 between Moycullen and Clifden, especially near Ballynahinch and roads are wet around Galway City, with snow on routes around Loughrea and Clifden.

You are advised to take extra care on all routes with snowy and icy conditions across the region and allow extra time for your journey and ten times the usual stopping distance from the vehicle in front.

Meanwhile, another snow/ice warning comes into effect across all of Connacht and Leinster as well as Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Snow accumulations of 5cm are possible, with larger falls on higher ground.

It takes effect from 2am tomorrow morning and expires at 12 noon.
