Despite reports, public demonstration, council and TII lobbying, the speed limits through the village of Breaffy, Castlebar remain at 100 km per hour.
The Breaffy community has been campaigning for years to get the speed through the busy village, located along the N60 between Castlebar and Balla, reduced to 60 km per hour, but to date to no avail.
The matter was raised again at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District by Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne.
He asked why the Consultants Report on the proposed reduction in the speed limit promised at the start of the month, remains outstanding. Council management explained that it is expected to be available by the end of this month.
Councillor Kilcoyne insists there is unanimous support in the Breaffy community and among elected councillors to reduce the speed limit in Breaffy and he says the ongoing delay is frustrating for everyone.
He has been speaking to Midwest News about the lack of progress on this important matter.
