Reserve teams of healthcare workers should be set up and put on standby to quickly deal with areas experiencing a major surge in Covid-19.
That’s according to Belmullet GP Dr Fergal Ruane, who says more numbers in the area would be useful to reinforce the health system when nurses, doctors and paramedic staff are self-isolating.
Dr Ruane will return to work on Monday- in compliance with public health guidelines- after making a full recovery from the virus.
The Belmullet GP has been taking appointments over the phone while he has been in isolation, as there was no locum doctor to cover in his absence.
The Belmullet Local Electoral Area has had 700 cases of the virus in the past fortnight and 300 in the previous two weeks before that.
The North Mayo GP told Midwest News that the situation in the area has been very trying over the past few weeks, but he says they still have all the usual medical complaints to deal with as well.
