A primary school in south Mayo has closed from today until January 5th , due to an outbreak of Covid 19 in the school, impacting on both students and teachers.
The decision to close the school was made last night by the school’s Board of Management working with the school’s Principal and staff.
However, Mayo Fine Gael deputy Alan Dillon claims that the school board and Principal have been forced to make this decision themselves without the assistance and advice that they would have expected to be provided by a Public Health Team in such situations.
The deputy says the decision to close a school is difficult enough, but he says it’s not acceptable that Public Health Teams are not involved in the whole process.
He has called for an investigation into the role of Public Health teams in situations like this, because he believes too great a burden has been left with the School management and principal in this particular case.
Cllr Dillon told Midwest News today more about the closure of a primary school in the south of the county.
Midwest News has contacted the HSE west today to seek clarification around the Covid 19 incident in a school in south Mayo, and we are awaiting a response.
