Dr Mike Ryan of the World Health Organisation, and a native of Charlestown, will be among the recipients of 2021 honorary degrees from NUI Galway.
Dr Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO, has steered responses to lethal disease outbreaks including Covid-19 around the world.
He's one of 14 people who will be conferred with Honorary Degrees by the Galway university next Summer.
Also among the recipients are Galway-born composer Eimera Noone - the first female conductor at the Academy Awards, traditional musician Máirtín O'Connor, poet Mary O'Malley, fillm-maker Bob Quinn, and Ronnie O'Gorman - founder and owner of the Galway Advertiser.
NUI Galway aims to hold the conferring ceremony next Summer, in line with public health guidelines.
