Gardai in Sligo will today undertake a week-long campaign targeting the unauthorised use of disabled parking bays, and unauthorised use of disabled parking permits in Co Sligo.
They will also focus on other forms of illegal parking which interfere with the movement of wheelchair users or people with limited mobility.
Operation ENABLE is a multi-agency initiative, involving Gardai in Sligo / Leitrim, Sligo County Council, the Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland and the Irish Wheelchair Association.
The initiative aims to raise awareness to motorists that it's an offence under road traffic laws to park or stop in a disabled parking bay, and could result in a €150 fine.
It's also an offence to alter, copy, forge or fraudulently use or lend a disabled parking permit to be used by another person.
