200,000 euro worth of works have just been completed under the Town & Village enhancement scheme in Headford.
Galway County Council secured 120,000 euro from the Department of the Environment for a project which involved undergrounding cables, new lighting, repairs to footpaths and a car park.
The overall cost of the project was 200, 000 when tendered. The shortfall in funding was made up by Galway County Council, utilising its own staff to carry out the works.
Local Fianna Fail Cllr Mary Hoade says the community is delighted with the enhanced appearance of the town and because of Galway County Council’s input together with two utility companies, there was a saving of 80,000 euro to taxpayers.
Galway County Council has worked as project manager with the ESB and Electric Skyline to underground electric cables, install new LED lighting and replace old defective footpaths and resurface and line out the car park.
Some works were also carried out to protect the old stone in the town’s Square that was a focal point in the community in the past, and is of historical interest.
Councillor Hoade spoke to Midwest News today about the development.
