The Mayo towns of Castlebar and Ballina can now avail of funding, due to an expansion of the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.
As part of the changes announced by Minister Heather Humphreys, 41 towns with a population of over 10,000 will be eligible to apply for funding for the first time, specifically for Covid-related measures - including Ballina and Castlebar.
Funding of up to €40,000 can be provided for projects which would increase footfall and social activity in towns, while addressing social distancing measures - such projects could include the creation of outdoor areas for social interactions, enhancing town centres by painting, cleaning and improving pedestrian access, providing equipment to run local festivals or events in towns and villages, and enhancing community buildings to accommodate remote working.
Communities can apply for the funding through their local authority by August 28th.
