Lower Pearse St in Ballina town centre has been extensively brightened up by Ballina Community Clean-Up, a voluntary group keen to make Ballina look vibrant and “funky” , while at the same time remembering and honouring its past.
Parts of the streetscape that looked somewhat derelict and run down, has been painted in bright colours and cosmetic windows and doors have been added to facades.
An exhibition of old photographs of Ballina, its businesses and people, is displayed across the windows of one of the newly painted premises.
Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley was in Ballina and saw it all first hand and met with two of the large body of volunteers that form Ballina Community Clean-up - David O’Malley and Martin Devaney.
They explained that they do the work with a sense of pride for Ballina.
