Ireland continues to have the most overcrowded primary classrooms in the EU, as new figures show 61% of primary school pupils nationally are in classes well above the EU average of 20.
The figures are published in today's Irish Independent, as schools prepare to reopen under social distancing rules enforced by Covid-19.
In Mayo, just over 52% of primary school children are in classes of 25 or more, 58% in Roscommon, 56% in Galway and 55 % in Sligo.
The INTO is pressing for a reduction in pupil numbers by one pupil per class per year over the next 5 years - in the interests of children's education.
