
Gardai in Castlebar are continuing their investigations into an alleged serious sexual assault case on a young woman in the county town in the early hours of Thursday morning last (December 27th).
They say they are following a definite line of enquiry in the investigation.
The woman, who is in her twenties, presented in a distressed state to Castlebar Garda Station in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Later that morning the woman was brought to the sexual assault unit in Galway City for a medical examination and gardai carried out a forensic examination of the area. The alleged attack took place in a laneway at Lucan Street close to Castlebar Town Centre.
Gardai say their investigations are ongoing and they are following a definite line of enquiry.
Investigating officers took a full statement from the victim on Thursday morning.
The time of the alleged incident was between 2 and 2.30 am
The alleged victim had earlier attended a nightclub event in Castlebar on St Stephen’s night.
CCTV footage showing activity in the nightclub has been obtained and is being studied by gardai as the investigation continues.
