Large crowds turned out yesterday in Tuam to take part in a march calling on Galway county council to approve a Greenway Feasibility Study from Athenry to Miltown - that would run along the former railroad, part of the proposed Western Rail Corridor.
The matter is due to go before Galway county councillors at the monthly meeting of the authority later today.
The Athenry to Milltown section of the closed railway has been branded as the “Quiet Man Greenway” by local campaigners seeking government funding from the National Greenway strategy to have a feasibility study completed on the route.
Both Minister Ciaran Cannon (FG) and deputy Anne Rabbitte TD (FF) spoke in favour of securing the funding required for a feasibility study on the route yesterday.
Brendan Quinn of the Western Rail Trail Campaign, a group campaigning for the development of a greenway from Athenry to Collooney, and supporting “The Quiet Man Greenway” development told Midwest News today that the turnout was phenomenal and he said however today’s vote goes at Galway County Council, the campaign to secure a greenway will nor go away.
