The new plaza in Knock village is being named Pope Francis Square.
The Minister for Rural & Community Development Michael Ring officially opened the new plaza in the Marian village this morning - just days ahead of the visit of Pope Francis to Knock Shrine.
Today also marks the anniversary of the Apparition in Knock.
Minister Ring's department provided funding of €100,000 towards the new plaza under the Town & Village Renewal Scheme.
The Minister said the new project links the square to the Parish Church and creates a new sense of place in the village for residents and visitors.
The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Blackie Gavin says the opening of the new Pope Francis Square is a significant day for Knock.
