The Connemara Greenway was officially launched at Recess yesterday morning by the Cathaoirleach of Galway county council, local Fine Gael councillor Eileen Mannion
Galway County Council has been working on a 6 km stretch of the project from Cloonbeg to Athry over the past eighteen months.
It’s part of a larger plan to create a greenway running from Galway to Clifden.
The master plan for the Connemara Greenway is to develop a 76km route stretching from Galway City centre out towards Clifden, along the path of the old rail line.
In 2016, Failte Ireland granted almost a million euro towards the development of the proposed amenity.
This funding, together with the co-operation of 19 local land owners, has led to the completion of the 6km section between Cloonbeg and Athry.
It runs adjacent to Ballynahinch Castle and Ballinafad graveyard.
Cathaoirleach Mannion told Midwest News more about the already popular new amenity for both locals and tourists.
