Four units of the Mayo fire service tackled a fire yesterday evening at a tar plant in a quarry at the Roadstone site in Moneen, Castlebar.
No-one was injured in the incident, but thick black smoke could be seen for miles around after the fire started.
Local residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed for a time to avoid fumes entering their homes.
However, the easterly winds carried the smoke mostly away from the urban area.
