Most of Connaught is today under an orange weather alert for snow and ice.
While a status red snow & ice warning now applies to Leinster, Munster & Galway, with sub-zero temperatures and significant snow accumulations expected.
However, the blizzard conditions have passed, and the public safety advice to stay indoors has now been withdrawn.
Nonetheless, large volumes of snow is falling on the erris pennisula this afternoon and roads in the area are described as very dangerous.
About 200 homes and businesses in the Bangor Erris area are without electricity this afternoon and the ESB says restoration time is not known.
Gardai across Co Mayo say all main roads are passable, but caution is needed on secondary and rural roads.
The Road Safety Officer for Mayo, Noel Gibbons told Midwest News today that with an orange alert in place motorists need to take due caution.
However, road conditions are a considerably worse in parts of counties Roscommon and Galway.
Schools and colleges across the West remain closed today, while public transport is at a standstill.
Ireland West Airport Knock, Shannon and Dublin Airports are closed today, and flights won’t resume until tomorrow.
No train services are operating today.
Businesses have also been severely impacted by the snow in recent days, as well as the arrival of Storm Emma. A number of business premises across the West closed early yesterday and are remaining closed today.
