Councillors in Ballina today deferred a decision to extend a lease on a building being used by the Men’s Shed in the town.
The group currently use the former Astoria Cinema as their base and there was a motion down at today’s meeting to extend that lease by 5 years.
The Men’s Shed say they will find it difficult to secure funding for projects, if they don’t have the certainty of a 5-year lease.
Senior Executive Officer with Ballina Municipal District Marie Crowley told the meeting that while there was nobody interested in buying the building at this very moment, there is a potential for development in that area and because of that they could not commit to giving a 5-year lease.
It was agreed that Councillors will meet with representatives of the Men’s Shed to try and agree a clause that could be inserted in any agreement in relation to the building.
