Minister Denis Naughten will meet today (Thursday) with the CEO of An Post to make the case for the retention of Ardnaree Post Office in Ballina.
The meeting had been scheduled for yesterday but was deferred until today.
The Post Master in Ardnaree Post office is due to retire in the middle of next month (March), and An Post has not re-advertised the position at the busy location, instead it undertook a public consultation process on local postal needs. The closing date for submission was Friday last.
Up to 1500 people marched in a public demonstration demanding the retention of Ardnaree Post Office last Saturday in Ballina, and hundreds of submissions have been made by the public to An Post on the issue, including 110 submissions from local businesses.
Fine Gael senator Michelle Mulherin told Midwest News this morning that she has asked Minister Naughten to call on An Post to immediately advertise the Postmaster position in Ardnaree
A spokesperson for An Post told Midwest News that it has agreed to meet representatives of the local action group for the retention of the Post Office a week from today (Thurs 8th Feb), as part of the consultation process.
