Industrial sites in Mayo and Galway are among 8 sites on the current EPA National Priority Site List for enforcement.
Shell E&P Ireland Ltd in Mayo, and East Galway Residual Landfill Site are among the 8 industrial and waste sites listed by the Environmental Protection Agency for failing to meet the necessary environmental standards, and the companies involved face further enforcement action.
Under this system, points are allocated to each site based on compliance data such as complaints, incidents and compliance investigations over the previous 6 months.
It takes account of the number of complaints from the public, as well as incidents where licence conditions are breached.
Sites which exceed a certain threshold become a National Priority Site and are targeted by the EPA for further enforcement action – up to and including legal action, suspension or having a licence revoked.
In order to be removed from the EPA list, the site must address the environmental issues and restore compliance in order to reduce its score.
