Mayo Fianna Fail deputy Dara Calleary says he will not support the repeal of the 8th Amendment.
He confirmed his position to Midwest News this morning.
He said having considered the recommendations of the Oireachtas Committee, he believes the current provisions in the Constitution offer the best protection to the unborn child.
The deputy’s position is in contrast to that of his party leader.
Yesterday evening in the Dail, Micheal Martin stated that he will support the proposals for abortion without restriction for up to 12 weeks into pregnancy.
The Fianna Fail leader’s position goes against the views of many in his party.
