The latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter shows Castlebar has improved to Clean to European Norms, climbing 18 places to 16th position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities.
Roscommon, Ennis and last year’s winner Kildare are now vying for the title of Ireland’s cleanest town, to be announced by Minister Denis Naughten at midday today in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin*.
Conor Horgan of IBAL told Midwest News this morning that Castlebar is starring in today’s result. An Taisce carried out the survey for IBAL and in it’s report said “Castlebar has continued its positive trend in recent surveys, with seven out of the ten sites surveyed getting the top litter grade and with no seriously littered sites. Some of the very good sites included the Car Park at Library / Swimming Pool, the residential area of Pavilion Road and St. Brid’s and St. Hubert’s School. MayO County Library Headquarters was a very well presented environment but it was let down by the litter in the low-lying shrubbery areas.
An Taisce surveyed 25 towns and 15 city areas on behalf of IBAL. Of these, none was judged to be a litter blackspot, and only one, Galvone in Limerick, was designated as “seriously littered”. 88% of towns were deemed clean, a slight improvement on the previous year, with 40% adjudged to be cleaner than the European average.
In contrast, city areas occupied 6 of the bottom 7 places in the rankings.
