The Mental Health Commission has published an inspection report on a centre in Castlebar, which achieved 97% compliance.

An Coillín, located beside Mayo University Hospital, is a 22-bed unit for continuing mental health care and long stay patients.

The report says the care and treatment of residents was noted as being excellent, and there were no conditions attached to the registration of the centre at the time of inspection.

The centre achieved 97% compliance overall - a 10% increase since its inspection last year.

The only non-compliance was in relation to the premises itself.

The Commission said this was due to the poor internal state of repair of the centre, as some of the walls were in need of repainting or repair, it was noted some windows were dirty and the flooring in one bathroom was stained and in need of replacing.

Two extractor fans were also broken, which meant the centre was not adequately ventilated.

Commenting on this and three other inspection reports in Waterford, Wexford and Limerick, the Inspector of Mental Health Services Dr Susan Finnerty praised all four centres for their continued commitment to providing high quality care for residents and in-patients.
