Joe was a much loved gentleman by everyone who knew him. He was a pleasure to know. His kind heart will never be forgotten by those who were the recipients of his great generosity. Joe was so proud of each of you his dear family. You were everything to him as he was to each of you. Joe was a man of strong faith and he lived the call of Jesus to do to others as you would like them to treat you.... Joe truly did this in the most respectful way. He was the cheerful giver and his charitable work and help with so many groups and organisations will long be remembered with great gratitude. God comfort you all at this very sad time as you mourn his loss. I will be praying for you all as you celebrate Joe's life at his Funeral Mass tomorrow. My sincere condolences to Kathleen and all Joe’s family at this sad time. Joe was a lifelong friend to our late parents Michael and Mamie O’Dwyer of Ballyhaunis, Enniscrone and Manchester. Joe and Kathleen gave unceasing support to the Irish community in Manchester through the Irish Association of Manchester. He provided work, leadership and friendship to many of the Irish diaspora over many generations. He lived the great truth and virtue that “ in giving we shall receive”- Joe’s generosity was genuine and deep. We will always remember Joe’s love of music and his beautiful voice, a heavenly gift. His voice will rise with the choir of angels. May Joe Rest In Peace. With love and warm remembrance of Joe from the O’Dwyer family, Michael, Mary, Sarah, Catherine and families around the world.
Anne Marie Coffey (née Duffy)- Brooklyn- Part 2
Joe and Evy have gone to heaven now. I find myself surprised that my younger cousins have departed before me. It appears out of sequence yet gives me insight into similar lamentations expressed by my own mother.

Joe’s parents, Patrick and Catherine Kennedy, were kind and generous souls. They introduced my own parents. They were good company in difficult times. Their friendship to my parents provided a foundational example of the possibility of goodness in people and this world.

To his credit, Joe captured the generous spirit of his parents, and shared it kindly through his business, philanthropic, faith and family efforts. I am perhaps most appreciative of the family dynamic that maintained extended relationships over decades and distance. Fond memories rise from gatherings at Aunt Winnie’s in Elmhurst, and later at Brendan’s Bar in Manhattan.

My sincerest condolences to Joe’s wife Kathleen and family. May we each follow Joe’s example and make the world a better place in our turn.

Anne Marie Coffey (née Duffy)- Brooklyn- Part 1
Joe’s mother and my mother were sisters. We are cousins. We started our life journey in Manhattan, New York; myself in 1935, and Joe in 1936. We knew him as Patrick then. I also have a brother Patrick. After Joe, the Kennedy children born in New York were Evelyn and John.

The Duffy and Kennedy children were close because their parents were close. Those experiences together continued as both families made efforts to permanently return home to Ireland. The Kennedys were able to settle in Doocastle. A world war and an ocean interfered with the Duffys’ plans, separating my brother and I from our parents for three years. Yet the same circumstance gave us three years with our grandparents and extended our childhood memories with the Kennedys. Evelyn and I became like sisters to one another. The Kennedy and Duffy children played and grew together, while world events lumbered on.

Dr Jerry & Teresa Cowley, Mulranny
Sincere condolences to Kathleen, John Eamon and Leon and son John and family. I had the great honour and privilege of nominating Joe as Mayo Person of the Year 2010. There was never anyone who deserved the title more and who appreciated the honour of being recognised by his own people. There was never anyone who had done more for Mayo’s deserving causes. He was so proud of his Mayo roots and he was a truly fair employer and a good friend to all his workers and such a Christian man. He helped so many causes including our St Brendan’s project in Mulranny at a time when banks were hanging people out to dry. Thank you Joe for your wonderful contribution to your home county and it was always a singular pleasure to meet you and experience your sparkling personality and maybe even be thrilled by a spontaneous burst of beautiful song. Joe was larger than life and was a true servant of Mayo and his Creator both of whom he was proud to serve and honour. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
