The government's officially called the by-elections to fill two empty seats in the Dáil.

The writs to fill the seats in Dublin South West and Roscommon-South Leitrim were moved in the last hour.

The two elections will take place on Friday the 10th of October.

They'll fill the seats left behind by Brian Hayes and Luke 'Ming' Flanagan when they were elected as MEPs.

A separate by-election in Carlow-Kilkenny, to replace the new EU commissioner Phil Hogan, isn't expected until the new year.

Hundreds of cyclists are taking to their bikes today in a bid to raise money for breast cancer research.

The hugely successful annual Mayo Pink Ribbon cycle has just departed from the TF Royal Hotel with cyclists taking a choice of three routes – 51 km, 111 km and 175 km, all of which begin and end in Castlebar.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny is a fan, having participated previously in the cycle. The 51km course takes in Glenisland, Beltra, Glenhest and Newport. The second route is 111km and takes in the scenic coastal areas of Mulranny and Achill Sound while the third route will take more experienced cyclists around the scenic lakes of north Mayo.

Midwest radio’s Angelina Nugent and David Cawley are among those taking part today.

Gardai are asking motorists to be aware of groups of cyclists on the roads today. There are no road closures and cyclists and motorists are asked to cooperate in sharing the roads for the Mayo Pink Ribbon cycle.

A Leitrim based author is in the running for a prestigious award for literature.

Philomena Kearney Byrne, who is a psychotherapist in Carrick-on-Shannon, is on the long list for the Sunday Times EPG Private Bank Short Story Award.

Ms Kearney Byrne was chosen for the final 16 from around 500 entries.

She was the winner of the Francis McManus Short Story Award last year for her piece ‘It’s All a Cod’.

Her entry to the Sunday Times Award is called ‘Honda Fifty’, and was inspired by the motorbike which is still iconic in parts of rural Ireland.

The winner of the Short Story Award will be announced at the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival in March.
