Louisburgh have their councillor as Chris Maxwell has been elected to Mayo County Council.

The Independent Ireland candidate received 1,939 votes after the second count, exceeding the quota of 1,865.

There were scenes of jubilation at the count centre in Castlebar as a result.

Three seats remain in the Westport area for Mayo County Council.

Bidding for those are the following:

Peter Flynn FG - 1,694 votes

Johno O'Malley IND - 1,495 votes

Brendan Mulroy FF - 1,410 votes

Christy Hyland IND - 1,343 votes

Kiera Keogh FG - 1,282 votes
