The result of last night's care ballot was the highest ever NO vote percentage in an Irish referendum.

It produced a final result of 74 percent NO to 26 percent YES, while the family ballot was also comprehensively defeated at 68 percent NO to 32 percent YES.

Only Dun Laoghaire in Dublin returned a YES vote in the family referendum, while all 39 constituencies voted NO in the care referendum.

In Mayo, the final results showed a 75.5% NO to 24.5% YES in the Family referendum, while in the Care referendum the final figures were 78.5% NO to 21.5% YES.

There was an overall turnout within the county of 43.3%.
