Farmers in Achill have received correspondence that they will not be penalised for the gorse fires that occurred on commonage land last spring.

That's according to local councillor Paul McNamara, who says farmers were told late last year that there had been an over declaration on their BISS payments and that as a result they may not receive anything.

They lodged an appeal to the Dept on the claim, and have got word this week that their appeal has been successful and they will receive their BISS payments.
