A Judge will now be in a position to decide if an individual should pay for or make a contribution towards their legal costs under a new bill published this morning .

The Minister for Justice said the Criminal Justice (Legal Aid) Bill 2023 aims to strengthen and  control criminal legal aid.

Helen McEntee said the courts will be now be able to impose a condition that the granting of legal aid is subject to a further assessment of an individuals income.
