A new bill is calling for a cap to be placed on RTÉ salaries.

The Broadcasting Bill - proposed by independent senator Rónán Mullen - would see salaries within RTÉ and TG4 pegged to public service pay scales.

It also proposes that no staff member or contractor should be paid more than the Minister for Communications, whose salary is currently 195 thousand euro.

Senator Mullen rejects the argument that RTÉ must offer high salaries in order to retain its top presenters.
