Just under two thirds of people living in Mayo were born in the county.

The Central Statistics Office have released census figures on Irish residents living in the county of their birth, with Mayo’s figure coming in at 65.9%.

That’s the fourth highest percentage in the country, with Cork topping the list (72.5%), Limerick in second (69.3%), and Donegal just behind (69.1%).

Elsewhere across the region, Galway and Sligo have similar percentages as Mayo.

Galway’s is exactly 2% lower than Mayo on 63.9% of those residing there being born in the county.

The figure in Sligo is slightly lower at 62.7%.

Roscommon has the lowest number of residents living in the county of their birth across the  region with 41.3%, 0.1% less than Leitrim.

Nationally, there is just one county where the percentage is less than one third, with Meath coming in at 32.4%.
