There is widespread intimidation of family members of drug users, by drug dealers, demanding that outstanding debt is paid. That’s according to Crossmolina based Fianna Fail councillor Michael Loftus.

The councillor raised his concerns about the increasing levels of isolation for families caught up in these situations at the county Joint Policy Committee meeting on Friday last.

It’s happening to families in towns and villages all across the county, he explained,  and families trying to deal with a family member using drugs become further stressed by the insistence from drug dealers that the user’s debt is paid in full.
 
Councillor Lofus says it’s important that families know that they should not isolate themselves felling a sense of shame, but rather approach an elected councillor or a garda and discover that there is help available.
