Ripple, an Irish urban transformation project from Ballina won the New European Bauhaus Prize 2023 in the ‘Reconnecting with nature' category, in Brussels at the weekend.
The Irish project was one of 5 winners in the main categories out of 61 finalists from across the EU, and secures a monetary prize of €30,000.
Ripple trialed a collaborative place-based approach to climate resilient green space in towns. With a community in Ballina that had faced socio-economic challenges, the project built the Paradise Garden, a climate-friendly amenity space and wildlife haven, where rainwater is slowed down on its way to the river.
The awards celebrate inspiring examples of existing projects and ideas from young talents, to make Europe more sustainable, beautiful, and inclusive.
