Parents need to be more proactive in monitoring what their children are watching online, according to a media lawyer.

Data from CyberSafeKids shows young children are being exposed to vast amounts of inappropriate content which can be violent and disturbing.

It also highlights that a fifth of children say they have seen something online that they wouldn't want their parents to know about.

Michael O'Doherty, Chairman of the Media, Internet, Data Bar Association, says social media companies could face huge fines if they don't improve how they deal with harmful material under the new online safety act..
