Seán Ó Tuairisg, the former broadcaster with RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta has died at the age of 78.

Originally from An Lochán Beag in Conamara, he was one of seven of the first male journalists who began with Raidió na Gaeltachta when it was established in Easter 1972.

Previously, he had been involved and interested in broadcasting since he took part in the Irish language pirate station Saor - Raidió Chonamara - just before Raidió na Gaeltachta was set up.

Previous to this, he graduated from University College Galway with an Arts degree and later studied teaching.

He spent time as a teacher in Coláiste Mhuire in Parnell Square in Dublin and also in Germany.

With Raidió na Gaeltachta, he was the first presenter with the flagship current affairs programme Adhmhaidin and later moved towards TV broadcasting, presenting the RTÉ current affairs programme Cúrsaí which aired four times a week.

He was awarded a Jacobs prize for his work in 1992.
